Dante Marcelli taught me pain, obedience, and how to please him.

For three years, he made me believe it was love.

Then I heard him tell his right-hand man the truth.

"Ava was practice. Isabella will get the finished man."

So that was all I had been. A lesson. A test. A quiet woman he trained before he married a real mafia princess.

I did not cry. I did not ask for an answer. I took off his bracelet, joined an emergency field team, and vanished from New York.

Dante never knew Ava Lane was only a name I used to hide.

My real name was Aviana Moretti.

The lost heir of the Moretti family.

The Ghost Surgeon.

The woman the underworld called when a bullet had already reached the heart.

When I returned to New York, I was no longer the Ava who waited for him.

I was Aviana Moretti.

Chapter 1

"Why are you shaking?"

Dante Marcelli stood over me in the dark, his voice low and calm. His fingers moved from my throat to my collarbone, slow enough to feel gentle, hard enough to hurt. Then he pressed down.

Pain cut through me. My body tried to pull away, but his hand closed around my chin and forced my face up.

"Do not move."

The order was soft. The grip was not.

Pain had always scared me. Dante knew that. Worse, he enjoyed watching me swallow it. A good girl did not flinch. A good girl did not complain. A good girl waited for praise and called it love.

"Ava." His breath touched my mouth. "You need to learn who I am. If I marry you one day, you cannot be afraid of my world."

New York's underworld knew about his private red room.

The Velvet Room.

Dark red walls. Silver chains. Masks hanging in the corner. For a trauma surgery resident who spent her days saving bodies from knives and bullets, this room should have felt sick.

Because of Dante, it had once felt sacred.

His mouth came down on mine with no tenderness. Only ownership. My own voice filled the room, saying his name because that was what he wanted to hear.

"Dante."

"Again."

"Dante, please."

His laugh was low. Pleased.

The restraint on my right wrist opened. Cold metal slid against my skin. When the blindfold came off, a black diamond bracelet circled my wrist.

Dante lifted my hand and kissed the bone there.

"A Marcelli family heirloom," he said. "Only my future wife gets to wear it."

For one breath, the world stopped.

Three years of hiding. Three years of living as Ava Lane, a quiet resident at a New York hospital. Three years of burying the Moretti name, washing blood from my past, and pretending I could be normal if Dante loved me enough.

Everyone said Dante Marcelli had no heart.

I had believed I found it.

The kiss on my forehead after a long shift. The black car waiting outside the hospital at midnight. The words he used when I was too tired to protect myself.

"Ava, you are different from them."

Afterward, he pulled on his shirt, bit down on an unlit cigar, and stepped onto the balcony to take a call.

A velvet box sat among my clothes. Inside was my grandmother's old pocket watch, the one every Moretti heir had guarded before me. My fingers closed around it.

If Dante trusted me with his family heirloom, maybe the truth could finally leave my mouth.

Bare feet crossed the cold floor. The heavy curtain shifted in the night wind, and Dante's voice slipped through the open balcony door.

"Her?"

He gave a short laugh.

"Too easy to train."

My hand tightened around the watch.

Outside, Dante was speaking to Enzo, his right-hand man.

"Isabella likes a man who can be gentle and still keep control," he said. "I practiced on Ava for three years. The patience is there now. So are the bedroom skills."

Something in Enzo's reply made him laugh again.

"Keep her around for now. She is decent practice. Next month, I get engaged to Isabella. Once the Vitale docks and gun route are mine, Ava can be handled."

The words went in clean.

Not loud. Not dramatic. Clean.

The black diamonds on my wrist suddenly felt heavy.

Future wife had never meant promise. It meant reward. A little collar for the woman who had learned to obey.

No scream came out. No tears. The pocket watch went back into my clothes, and my feet carried me away from the balcony before he could see my face.

Minutes later, Dante came inside smelling of smoke. His arms closed around me from behind. That same sweet voice returned, smooth enough to fool a weaker version of me.

"Baby, why are you so cold?"

Disgust rose through my body. My shoulders almost shook. Instead, I leaned back against him.

"I am tired."

At three in the morning, his breathing was deep beside me. His phone sat on the nightstand.

My birthday failed as the password.

Two seconds passed.

0815 opened it.

Isabella Vitale's birthday.

The screen unlocked to his notes.

"When I have full control, I will make her kneel beside me because she wants to."

Under it, one line waited.

"Ava taught me patience. Isabella will get the finished man."

I watched it all with a blank face, then locked the screen and put the phone back where it had been.

Dante was still asleep.

I turned away and picked up my own phone.

The contact was Dr. Ward.

When the call connected, I did not hesitate.

“Dr. Ward, if the field hospital still needs a surgeon, I’ll go.”
